Chord Formation

Most guitar players want to be able to play chords to accompany their singing or to play in a band. Learning different chords can give you a wider variety of accompanying techniques, and also can expand your capabilities.

In this chapter, we learn that certain chords bear special relationships to each other, and that these chords are likely to be used together in harmonizing a song. We see how the related chords can be derived from the major scale of any key, and how to build these in forms suitable to the guitar. We learn how to form the dominant, subdominant, and relative minor chords in any key, and also how to create some other useful chords that are in common use. Finally we use a chart known as a “chord clock” to aid transposition.
