Classical Virtuoso Secrets

This chapter is for those who feel they may want to pursue a serious interest in the classical style. There is a deep-seated belief, which I shared at one time, that there was a special “trick” that could be learned by studying with the right person. However, after participating in master classes of both Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream, I realized that there was no magic trick that would achieve instant results and take the place of hard work. However, there were some clear guidelines to making the best of one’s potential—some related to technique, some to study habits, and some to activities away from the guitar. Here are some of my conclusions.
